Better Half

You shrink from the darkness

Like a coward.

Erased by shadows, or a drop

In the thermometer

You constantly watch over;

My personal gargoyle

Guarding the gates

That stem the tide,

This torrent of torment

Telling tales and lies and torrid goodbyes.

You kept me warm all summer

In relentless heat;

My home and my hearth,

Until the sun grows unruly,

Unduly escaping its duty

To keep you chained inside me.

I flourish, but only in the presence of you;

A better me, I can get for free,

Though only free from winter’s grasp.

Where do you go? I need to know.

You disappear, I lose my path;

Just wear some layers, my better half.
